Post of the Week: Premium Upgrade not being recognized on devices

Post_of_the_week-blue.png

Hey everybody!

It’s Post of the Week time. This week, the prize goes to a Rising Star who consistently provides very friendly and welcoming replies, and is always willing to contribute to discussions even though there isn’t a clear answer on the topic.

This user had just upgraded to Premium and listed a couple of questions: POTW3_3.PNG

Even though there were some tricky ones there, it was no biggie for @merlijnv2000, who replied with the following, friendly as ever:

POTW3_RSanswer.PNG

The message had a very good vibe, and each point gave brief but efficient info/steps to take, not going too far in terms of explanation as the post is split into several questions. The user gave a Like and was very happy:POTW3_Useranswer.PNG

Everyone give a round of applause to @merlijnv2000 for this awesome post. A month of Premium is on its way ^^

Until next week!

Post of the Week: Reuse username as artist?

Post_of_the_week-green (3).png

Hello Spotify Community,

It’s time for our Post of the Week again. This week the winner is none other than our Rock Star @Maxim

An artist accidentally created a regular Spotify account, trying to get an artist account. She was afraid that she wouldn’t be able to reuse the username after closing the account. Check out the thread here.

@Maxim replied, telling the user not to worry and also explained to her how to get an artist account on Spotify.

So very well done -- Have a month of Premium on us 🙂

The Tip-Off: GKR

tip off bunny.jpg

Smokepurpp + Cooliecut + colours + fire = GKR

I was confused but pleasantly surprised when I first came in contact with GKR’s music. Confirming to me once again that flow and energy is just as important as understanding the lyrics.

He started releasing tracks via online media back in 2014, selected Artist of the year by The Reykjavík Grapevine Magazine in 2016 and as of today has featured on some of Icelands biggest music festivals. GKR has definitely already made an impact on the Icelandic Hip Hop scene. It shouldn’t stop there though. Despite being told to steer away from rapping in Icelandic if he wants to make it outside of Iceland, GKR has been determined to represent the Land of Fire and Ice in Icelandic with tight hooks, bass-heavy instrumentals and vibrant colours you can hear. GKR really knows how to pack a punch in a charismatic way. This can be heard on the following collaboration with Birnir from GKR’s latest studio album ÚTRÁS.

spotify:track:72jU1tLNiYd8EIj26Ba17Q

The song which started it for me would be “Tala Um” which was released back in 2016 on his self-titled album. Funky foleys, volcano’s erupting pastel-coloured lava and not to forget a downpitched 808 bassdrum to round it all off.

spotify:track:5iXBVfWoP3AhaUqEOxdfRU

GKR can be considered a fresh take on contemporary hip hop. And a very welcome one if you ask me.

What The Stars Are Listening To 2019 : #03

Our Community Rock Stars can submit blog posts to be published on the Spotify Community Blog

Can you believe that winter is almost over? Still 3 weeks and Spring will be there. It’s time to check What The Stars Are Listening To for conducing us until a new season.

We asked Rock Stars to send us 2 or 3 tracks of their choice with some words for each one.

It’s time now to listen (and read) their third selection for 2019.

What The Stars Are Listening To 2019 : #03

@Brunelicia (Rockstar)

● NF -- Therapy Session

“That dude’s music is very relatable. I just love how NF is so real about our world. This one truly hit me harder the first time I listened to. Now, it’s been on repeat all day. Meaningful lyrics are everything for me.”

spotify:track:6WKk8l8EXiwPBYlmSlhZWx:small

● Thousand Foot Krutch -- Courtesy Call

“I’d call this one probably my “go to work out” song. I absolutely love the vibe and it instantly wakes me up. The lyrics “I am not afraid of the storm that comes my way, when it hits it shakes me to the core and makes me stronger than before” got me really obsessed with this song. The first time I listened to Courtesy Call, I think I repeated just the beginning at least 8 times.”

spotify:track:4iWYPj04kHXcZK0st5yzZf:small

@Sebasty (Rockstar)

● Cocktail Party Effect -- Bangers

“As the name suggest, this one is a true banger! The artist is based in Berlin and creates some raw fantastic techno beats.”

spotify:track:4jNCAIIMbvl474eSR71kmz:small

● Ludique -- A Story on How Dangerous Love Can Be

“There is something truly ethereal about this track. The way how the ‘Spark’ happens in the song really shows how dangerous love is -- once it happens, you’re done.”

spotify:track:10a0L0EImvoD7v1cpfuY3j:small

● Amon Tobin -- On a Hilltop Sat The Moon

“That’s a new song from the upcoming album. Amon Tobin has taken on a magical route to ambience, rather completely different than what his previous albums were””

spotify:track:7ltD8Tp0wKA34z8ExG0YJI:small

@LeoRager (Rockstar)

● Lil Mosey -- Noticed

“I absolutely love this song from Lil Mosey. It’s been out for a while, but it popped up in my Discover Weekly and what can I say. It has such a chill vibe to it, that only a little portion of rap songs do. The beats are awesome and Lil Mosey’s rapping is on point.”

spotify:track:6JQvHMSaR8flFsN53ypOfP:small

● A Boogie Wit da Hoodie -- Swervin (feat. 6ix9ine)

“Continuing with the chill vibe, Swervin. I stumbled upon this song while I was reviewing A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie’s album, and it struck me as the best song on the album. I’m not a big fan of 6ix9ine’s part, but I don’t hate it.”

spotify:track:1wJRveJZLSb1rjhnUHQiv6:small

@Jpgchief (Rockstar)

● Delicate Steve -- Freedom

“Delicate Steve (Steve Marion) reminds me, a little, of another extraordinary guitar player -- Johnny Marr. Both play in-demand for other bands or artists and I love the sound they create. The new album was released March 1st.”

spotify:track:3W2pxsqCNrHjM0Rvvqa2oR:small

● Christopher The Conquered -- The Day I Went Solo

“I believe that this track is beautiful and painful at the same time. I really enjoy it and hope you can too.”

spotify:track:2RzwwcysBnfprYgtBplya0:small

● Grim Streaker -- A.D.D.

“This Brooklyn band plays Punk or skate. This is their most recent track. It’s short, fun, noisy and I love it.”

spotify:track:5y9ViL9LRKiMRgVqAeCCb8:small

@Soundofus (Rockstar)

● The Claypool Lennon Delirium -- Blood and Rockets

“In a world where most mainstream music sounds the same, where appearance takes the lead on ability, there are still talented artists taking the time to create elaborate concept albums. The latest release of the band created by bassist/vocalist Les Claypool (from Primus), and guitarist/vocalist Sean Lennon is a perfect example of what talented musicians working together are able to create. It’s psychedelic, it’s full of harmonies, it’s full of sophisticated compositions and, of course, it’s “Beatlesque” (How can it be another way with John Lennon’s son) “

spotify:track:6j7JqWig0zhX0wzUE3cQi4:small

● Son Of Dave -- Another Man Down

“Canadian born but living in England for more than twenty years, Son Of Dave (Benjamin Darvill) has a passion -- the Blues. Previously a member of the band Crash Test Dummies, he returned to the Blues for his solo work. He is not a traditional bluesman in that he has introduced a new way to play the genre with beat-box and percussions. That’s the perfect example of how to be modern without forgetting the roots. Foot taping and fingers snapping guaranteed.”

In Our Headphones: April 2019

In_our_headphones-green.png

Hello everyone!

With May here, it’s time to have a look at which songs were in our headphones during April.

I think most of us were excited when the new season of Game of Thrones came out, and so was our Kate. She had this to say: “The two songs from GoT are fresh from the new season. The anticipation paid off and I got not one but two from the soundtrack. Also, Ramin is my favorite artist ever (has even been on my top x year lists more than once).” Let’s have a look at the songs she is talking about:

spotify:track:1u0THw5xaGd7sYzJEh48Lt

spotify:track:0b7p3kryLGENxN71B35ptm

As for my choice, I couldn’t help but have at least one Ivan B song in my headphones. He is my all time favorite artist so when his new album ‘Remains’ came out in the beginning of April, I made it a priority to listen to it immediately. Luckily I was roadtripping that day and I had plenty of time, bonus is that my mom liked his music too! While the whole album was great, the song ‘Chapter 2’ stood out for me (I have a thing with relatable lyrics):

spotify:track:2Um96aJzMY4o3mcGK6udrn

I wasn’t the only one roadtripping, let’s talk about Kate’s choices again. “The french song: I heard it while I was starting a trip and it was very uplifting (the weather was foggy and rainy and the song talks about good weather -at least-).” The French song? Let’s see which one she means:

February 2019 Ideas Review

No, I think he meant this one. The other one seems to be from 2012(!).
As with the new update (at least new for me) there is no possibility to go to the songs saved from one artist, since the artists in the artist tab only lead to their respective artist page. Instead we have one giant “Liked Songs” Playlist (5000+ tracks) with every song we saved, which we should go through, just to play the songs we like from an artist? In which filtering for a string plays every song, which has the string somwhere in their title’s, artist’s or album’s name?
Or are we supposed to create a Playlist for every artist, with only the songs we like from them? That would take hours, and it doesn’t help decluddering the UI. Saving Albums is also not an option, since there are a lot of them, which consist half of instrumentals and live versions, that one might not like to hear; or are Singles and EP’s which make you switch Albums every few minutes.

Also Saving a whole album makes it appear in the “Album” tab solely, while saving a whole album apart from a few songs makes the songs appear in “Liked Songs” not in the Album tab.
I don’t see any advantages in the new UI and sorting, and I am genuinly mad about how inconvenient it is. If this doesn’t get fixed soon I really have to consider changing to another platform.

In Our Headphones: February 2019

In_our_headphones-blue (1).png

Hey everyone!

With March here, it’s time to look back at the tunes that caught our attention in February and share them in our favorite monthly blog.

Some of them were recommend by Spotify through radio stations or playlists like Discover Weekly, while others were inspired by concerts or movies that stayed with us. Other tracks returned to our headphones from the past, others accompanied us on our way to work or even, while working and others did their best to bring a smile on our faces.

Let’s delve right in! For @Daisy, the contributions to this month’s In Our Headphones playlist were an easy pick. Her first choice is all about childhood:

spotify:track:3TAtUJc4Sj913Cs5gBUeu0

“When I was younger I would always listen to this album on the loudest volume. My parents were not happy with that. When this song came on I would sing along and that’s when they would eventually tell me to be quiet. I came across it again recently and now I can’t stop listening to it. I still sing along -- only this time it’s not my parents complaining, but my roommate.”

@Peter had the good fortune to see Tom Speight and Tom Odell live in concert in the Bulgarian capital’s most iconic venue, namely the National Palace of Culture’s Hall 1.

“I was really surprised to hear that Tom Odell would be visiting Sofia on his European tour, so I figured I should check him out. I wasn’t a big Tom Odell fan at the time, and I’d only listened to the odd Tom Speight song when shuffling through music on Spotify, so I didn’t have high expectations from either. Both of them gave phenomenal performances, and I’ve been digging into their respective back catalogues on Spotify ever since. While Tom Odell already has three albums under his belt, his namesake is just getting started, with his debut album coming out in April. Good things are surely in store for the young singer-songwriter.”

Hence, it’s not surprising his top tunes for February were inspired by seeing them in action:

spotify:track:7ztnKKikcQzjJT1vOBhqGL

spotify:track:1ue1rcTQ3kw47AQR90OYna

If you’re curious what else made it to our headphones this past February, worry no more. Here’s the full playlist for you to enjoy:

spotify:user:spotifycommunity:playlist:6lv6DjjryalvuDqg0oirRb

Some great tunes heard around the office are included 🙂

Don’t forget to let us know in a comment below about the tunes that made it to your headphones in February.

As a bonus, we’ll leave you with this great track from the lovely @rgmk2spotify:track:3oBbsA0Etxg0doF0b4nrd0

And that’s a wrap. See you all next month!

#MusicMonday Review – February 2019

For many years, I’ve used the hashtag #MusicMonday to share some music recommendations from up-and-coming artists. Always fresh, and always different, trying to look for trends before they become one. You can check last month’s review, or my 2018 My Year In Music to see some of my more recent posts.

Valentine’s month has come and gone, so let’s take a trip around the world for some highlights from February 2019:

Filipa -- Good Behavior

First stop: a tune that takes us to a place where a crush can be so strong that anything goes, and it’s OK.

Maggie Cassidy -- Guide Me

“looking out for one another through tough times… the experience of growing up, the struggles of that, and how all we can really do is look after one another… we’re the only angels you can depend on.”

Press Club -- My Body’s Changing

But in love things not always go as planned. From Melbourne, Australia, we get some indie rock about the determination of moving on, even when the pain of breaking up is almost unbearable.

Brit Daniels -- History

Our journey continues to Nashville, TN, with a pop piece about growing apart from your significant other, but still not letting go. In her own words:

“One of my friends experiences helped inspire the idea behind the song… It’s like they had been together for so long that they were scared of what it would be like to not have each other. It was a comfortability thing but nothing was working… the only thing keeping you with someone is the history between you two.”

SOAK -- Valentine Shmalentine

Finally, from , the song that describes how love sometimes gets us lost in our own feelings.

Love comes in many different shapes and forms, and there’s nothing better than music to relate to all of them. If a song makes you remember a feeling, a person, or a place, it’s because music creates an emotional connection that can last forever.

March 2019 Ideas Review

Hello guys,

I’m a ComSci student and I made a web app for my final year project that recommends a playlist according to the user’s captured facial expression (powered by a machine-learning model). So for instance, when the user smiles at the camera/webcam, the system will then predict that their current mood is happy and the app will display a list of tracks according to the track attributes matching the happy mood.

The main goal of this project is to provide a supplementary approach for accessibility in music applications and initiate convenience for users where promptly deciding to browse or search for a playlist can be mitigated with a feature utilizing the state-of-the-art technologies.

I’m curious to know whether this type of feature can be regarded by the developers/ end-users so give me a shoutout if you’re down with this kind of groundbreaking proposal!

The technologies used are: Python, ReactJS, Flask, and ofc Spotify API.
